Last weekend I had the honor to attend and learn something in Budapest, at a miniature painting workshop with Natalia Oracz, a professional miniature painter from Poland.

    Click for enlarged picture

The workshop itself was held in Pivnica Legenda (Legenda Sörfözde), which produces extremely delicious beers with fruity flavors, which for me as a person who is not a fan of craft beer was surprisingly tasty and drinkable, especially mango-flavored beer.

Also, the food was really reasonably priced and extremely tasty.

Arriving in the pub itself, I went to the first floor, and saw how the owner of the pub has an understanding of such hobbies, given that he himself is engaged in railway modeling (he literally has a table 8-10 meters long with a large model railway).

    Click for enlarged picture

The theme of the workshop was Alice Cross bust by Neko Galaxy, and the lecturer paitned the bust using zenithal highlight before the workshop.

    Click for enlarged picture

The topics of painting without washes, blending without glazes (working only with colors and achieving painterly tonality in the difference of lighting), non-metallic metal steel and accompanying reflections were covered.

    Click for enlarged picture

I have to admit that at first I was a little frustrated, because I have never attended an international workshop before, and especially not with this level of coloring, both of the lecturer and fellow participants.

However, I decided to take the best I could for myself and set to work. Natalia had the patience to give feedback in multiple rounds to each of the participants, as well as for other miniatures, either physically or from photographs.

    Click for enlarged picture

I found these tips to be extremely useful, and I will try to apply them to future works.

    Click for enlarged picture

As I said a moment ago, the other participants painted their works at a truly enviable level, and I am not at all surprised that they win prizes at a number of competitions, and have managed to maintain the standard at competitions such as Mosonshow for years.

    Click for enlarged picture

However, for me personally, the workshop was quite useful, because the lecturer tried to push every single one of us out of our comfort zone, even if by force (by repainting parts of the bust, yes, really), in order to force us to try something new.

At first, this approach was strange to say the least, but over time it became extremely useful.

I would like to thank Miklos Bute for organizing an extremely useful workshop, and Natalija for extremely useful advice, as well as for helping me try something unusual for my previous painting.

    Click for enlarged picture

    Click for enlarged picture

    Click for enlarged picture

    Click for enlarged picture

    Click for enlarged picture

    Click for enlarged picture

    Click for enlarged picture

    Click for enlarged picture

    Do idućeg puta!

In this article, it will be explained briefly how to paint several figures at once (batch painting) to the level of tabletop quality, using the example of Fenryll miniatures.

    Click for enlarged picture

For coloring, I chose 5 medieval figures that we are coloring as part of the Agram Group Build Project #4 project. After the black undercoat, I applied the base colors to the clothes. Two or three types of brown and one darker green (dull tone).

    Click for enlarged picture

Then came the washes. Agrax Earthshade, Athonian Camoshade, Seraphim Sepia and the indispensable Nuln Oil.

    Click for enlarged picture

When the washes were completely dry, I added highlights, first the same shades as the basecoats, and then slightly lighter shades.

    Click for enlarged picture

I painted the skin of the figures in the basic color (Basic Skin (AK)). Two or three coats were needed because of the black undercoat.

    Click for enlarged picture

I then added a wash I made myself using a mix of Basic Skin (AK), Black Red (AK) and Lahmian Medium (GW).

    Click for enlarged picture

Finally, I added details, red, green, blue, as well as highlights to the face (again Basic Skin (AK)) and hair.

    Click for enlarged picture

It took me a bit over 90 minutes to finish these five miniatures.

    Click for enlarged picture

    Click for enlarged picture

Potom su uslijedili washevi. Agrax Earthshade, Athonian Camoshade, Seraphim Sepia i neizostavni Nuln Oil.

    Click for enlarged picture

Kada su washevi bili skroz suhi, dodao sam highlighte, prvo iste nijanse kao i basecoati, a potom malo svijetlije nijanse.

    Click for enlarged picture

Kožu figura sam obojao u osnovnu boju (Basic Skin (AK)).

    Click for enlarged picture

Zatim sam dodao wash kojeg sam napravio sam koristeći mješavinu Basic Skina (AK), Black Red (AK) i Lahmian Medium (GW).

    Click for enlarged picture

    Click for enlarged picture

For all those who do not like to have more paint on their fingers than on miniatures, holders are a wonderful invention. Whether you're using an expensive model from Games Workshop or an old cork to hold your miniatures while you paint them, you're probably not taking advantage of nature's most fun force: magnetism.

I personally use an improvised holder with a total price of less than 10 kuna (even with skyrocketing inflation), which I responsibly claim offers better ergonomics and safety of use than those for which you will pay many times more in the store.

It is produced from only two ingredients: a wooden figure and a neodymium magnet. No more fastening the base or gluing the figure with patafix, duct tape and similar impractical means. Magnets are extremely practical and if you already use them on the bases of your miniatures, you won't need to change anything in your painting process.

The manufacturing procedures are as follows:

Get a wooden figure (or several) that fits comfortably in your hand. These "man don't get angry" variants are about 10 cm tall and fit in the palm of your hand, have a slot for the thumb and can stand on the table by themselves. They can be obtained from hobby and craft supply stores.

    Click for enlarged picture

The top of the holder must be flat, so we will "chop off" half the head of this figure to leave a flat surface on the upper side.

    Click for enlarged picture

Every good executor uses protective equipment. Smart in the head, protective gloves on the hands.

    Click for enlarged picture

The operation is successful and we have a flat surface. After cutting, you will probably have chips and remnants of wood left on the edges, so just go over the surface and the edges you cut with coarse sandpaper/sandpaper so that they don't get hurt on it.

    Click for enlarged picture

Take a wood drill bit and drill a shallow hole in the top. An ordinary drill will do if you don't really have a wood drill bit (you'll recognize it by the "spike" on the top).

    Click for enlarged picture

Try to make a hole that is just as deep as the height of the neodymium magnet (it can be bought in various hobby and electrical stores for less than half a kuna per piece), and the diameter of the hole should be 1-2 mm larger than the magnet. If you drill a millimeter too far, don't worry. The magnet is strong enough even if it is not completely flush with the wood. We made a hole with a depth of 2mm x 12mm because we will put a 2x10 magnet.

    Click for enlarged picture

Pour wood glue into the groove (karbofix can be found at any hardware store and you probably already have it for other hobby purposes). Place enough to fill the slot completely.

    Click for enlarged picture

Insert the neodymium magnet and press it so that it sits in the bottom of the slot and wipe off the excess adhesive that will squeeze out, but do not remove too much. You want the glue to hold the magnet on every side except the top, so we made a slightly wider hole. Let the glue dry overnight.

    Click for enlarged picture

And that's it! You have a holder to which you can quickly and safely attach and detach the miniature without gluing, fastening or other complications. Just keep in mind that the miniature on the bottom of the base must have a piece of metal or magnet facing the right way to attract with the one on the holder. No more colors on your fingers or cramps in your tendons from clumsy and expensive braces. Happy painting!

Ugodno bojanje!
