Exhibition: Luka Hrgović - Slice of Life, Greta 2018.
Greta Gallery, Ilica 92, Zagreb, 24.09.2018. – 28.09.2018.
Slice of Life is the title of a science fiction, short film directed by Luka Hrgović and Dino Julius. The film was made during several years and the authors like to talk about it as their "passion project". It is an homage to the films of the golden age of Sci-Fi cinema of the 1980s. All the effects were done "old school" as those in the legendary films: Alien, Star Wars, and most of all Blade Runner, which was the main inspiration for the creation of Slice of Life. There are no computer generated effects and 3D animations in the film. All of the visual effects were performed using miniatures and back projection.
In this exhibition we had the opportunity to see various artifacts used in the film, such as models and "matte paintings" *. Luka Hrgović is mostly responsible for making of the models with the help of the young and talented Sandrino Požežanac, while the "matte paintings" were painted by Stipan Tadić.
The exhibited pieces of architecture and vehicles introduce us to the creative, dark, dystopian world of Slice of Life, while the "matte" images enhance the impression itself and literally draw us into that world.
Here is the official documentary about making of the models and miniatures titled Slice of Life - The Magic of Miniatures.
Enjoy!
* Matte painting is one of the oldest film visual techniques used since the very beginnings of cinema. They are most often painted in oil on glass and depict large landscapes and sets that were not practical / cost-effective to build in a film studio.
