Black Templars Sword Brother – part 1
In this series of articles, I will explain my approach to painting a Black Templar Sword Brother from the old metal box, in the first article, I will be explaining the miniature preparation step.
Since we are talking about a metal miniature, the needed tools are: small diamond files (the author owns a Gale Force 9 set), a sharp scalpel, a bowl with warm soapy water and an old toothbrush.
Using the scalpel, remove the smaller mould lines which occur as a consequence of casting on places where the mould halves meet.
Using the diamond files, remove the mould lines from the larger, rounder areas, such as the lower and outer side of the miniature’s cape.
After all of the visible mould lines have been removed, there is a possibility that the edges and jagged parts of the miniature still contain flash (the top of the claws or feet), this flash can easily be removed using a scalpel.
After the removal of the mould lines and flash, it is recommended to place the miniature into a bowl of warm, soapy water, because powder or a similar medium, which is used as a mould release agent, as well as oil and grease from your fingers can still be present on the miniature in a smaller or larger amount, which can pose adherence issues when applying the primer on the miniature. After the miniature has dried, it can be placed on its base or a similar holder, and using light horizontal movements, apply a spray black primer onto the whole surface of the miniature (the author has used black matte spray by Cosmos).
