We visited: Lucca Comics&Games 2022
Lucca Comics&Games is one of the largest comics, games and fantasy fairs in Europe. It takes place every year at the end of October in the Tuscan city of Lucca.
Lucca has perfectly preserved city walls from the Renaissance era that stretch around the old city center, and the Lucca Comics&Games fair occupies that entire space for several days. The streets were incredibly crowded from the first day (the number of daily visitors exceeded the local population many times over), so seeing the local sights was an impossible mission. The city was great to see on a normal weekend and visit the old churches, and the Torre Guinigi - a 45 meter tall tower topped with trees.
I visited the fair as a guest of the Italian publisher of comics and games Hollow Press, who presented several new projects there; among others the boardgame Boneforest, for which I did the painting and photography of demonstration figures.
Hollow Press also published a new book by John Blanche, a well-known British illustrator, concept artist and art director who spent decades working for Games Workshop and shaping the visual identity of Warhammer. On this occasion, an exhibition of Blanche's originals was held at Lucca Comics&Games.
As part of the fair, a charity auction was held where an exclusive version of the Heroquest boardgame was sold, and the funds were donated to the Emergency charity. This special copy of Heroquest received a handmade wooden box, the DM screen was painted by the illustrator Milivoj Ćeran, and the figures were painted by numerous award-winning miniaturists.
