Lizardmen - Scar Veteran on Carnosaur kitbash
The idea for the conversion came from long hours of playing Total War Warhammer, where Scar Veteran and Carnosaur can be found separately. I liked the idea of Saurus having his dinosaur as a companion rather than a "riding animal". Having bought a used Carnosaur and Scar veteran kit (I also had leftover weapons from other kits), I decided that I could also have an interesting experiment with fully playable figures: Scar Vet solo, mounted and with all weapon options; and all "GW tournament friendly".
To begin with, how to orient them, where to put the weapons? I decided on a greenstuff backpack on the Carnosaur, added straps for realism. The straps are semi-successful - I should have made them thinner, but you learn from your mistakes.
I saw a Carnosaurus conversion that has the "armor" of a Stegadon head and fell in love with the idea, I removed one extra head from the Stegadon kit and added greenstuff horns. They turned out messy, but I like them that way and they add to the combat damage image.
Scar veteran was too basic for me in the original, so I decided to add armor and belts to him, plus a weapon on the tail modeled after the game.
The only thing left for modeling was to create a base, I decided on a jungle-like environment for all my lizards, so this Carnosaur walks between tall plants, ergo an artificial plant from TEDI and a stolen dry branch from a vase. The base is magnetized, as are the weapons.
Painting is the simpler part, I wanted to make the Carnosaurus in the colors of autumn, so that it blends more with the green surroundings. It is mostly painted with zenithal highlights and washes, the belly is a basic cream color with washes and highlights. I imagine in my head that the fighting dinosaurs are sacred to the Lizardmen, so I give them "ritual palm prints" - these are the scribbles on the legs and neck.
Saurus is characteristically bright blue with a dark line. Weapons and shields are school based on official art, with some experimentation, which I am quite satisfied with (black base, gray wet blend and then off-white as highlight and scratches). As an added fluff element, I linked them thematically with similar white tattoos around the head.
