Painting SM Weapons
This is my new favorite recipe for guns and weapons in minipainting. I first used it on Star Wars Legion models, since their guns are usually worn and toned-down, not suppose to take too much attention in the paintjob. But then also used it on these converted Space Marine models, and I'm pleased with the look. Simple, subtle and speedy.
I start with a heavy white dry-brush over a black primer.
Then I mix the Citadel Contrast paint Rattling Grime with a little bit of Contrast Medium (I find that this specific contrast paint is to opaque without the medium, covering up most of the dry-brush) and cover the whole weapon in one layer of this mix.
Again a dry-brush, this time a light one of a bright silver/metallic paint, in this case Runefang Steel from Citadel.
I then pick out some of the raised details of the gun, and where I want the focus to be, with the same paint, but with a regular brush, doing a few edge highlights, as well as a mixing in a bit of white paint into the metallic color, for my last few raised highlights.
Lastly I do a wash with a red ochre oil paint in a few crevices, cleaning off most of it with a make-up sponge doused in white spirits, to leave a subtle rust color in some selected places, and the weapon is finished. I used an oil paint because I've been having fun experimenting with oil paints lately, but any dark orange paint, like Skrag Brown from Citadel, works. Just remember to mix in a lot of water in the orange paint, before applying it.
