Display base for Roman diorama
In this article I will try to explain how to make a small stage base for a Roman diorama/vignette.
I decided to place the Roman soldiers somewhere along the edge of the (Roman) road at the beginning of the forest. The first thing I set out to make was a Roman road. I made it with the help of rollers from Green Stuff World, which I pressed into DAS clay.
When the clay was slightly dry, I placed it on a balsa base that I had previously cut into the desired irregular shape (krumpiroid). I made the back part of the diorama - the stone beginning of the forest from the decorative bark of a tree.
After that, I modeled the transitions from the road to the bark stones with clay.
Then came the coloring. I started to apply various tones of washes on the light base (colors of DAS clay). Green, blue, purple, reddish and connected everything with black.
This was followed by drying and then the application of oil effects in order to get an uneven weathering on the stone road. I removed the excess oil paint using Odourless Thinner.
I let the oils dry well.
After a layer of acrylic highlights, it was time to add the vegetation. I had already set up a position for the pine, and next to it I added various plants mainly from Diorama Presepe and Martin Wellberg Scenic Studios. The tufts are from Gamer's Grass or from Green Stuff World.
I added some vegetation and twigs along the road - making sure they didn't get in the way when positioning the figures on the diorama.
And that was it!
