WW2 Monastery Scene – making a chandelier
In this series of articles, I will follow the creation of a diorama of a monastery set at the end of the Second World War when the Americans had already invaded Germany, which shows a company in the middle of a rest. These articles do not actually follow the chronological creation, but are arranged according to some thematic units.
Therefore, the first couple of articles will be about the creation of individual details that I will incorporate into the diorama itself. First, we start with making a wooden chandelier with candles. The base for the chandelier will be a 1/35 scale wooden carriage wheel. For the chain, I use a chain that I got in one of the stores with hobby items (for making jewelry).
I glued the chain with superglue, being careful not to glue the links unnecessarily. When installing it in the diorama itself, I will see if it will be necessary. Also, I cut the chain to a very likely oversized dimension - I'll shorten it as needed when incorporating into the diorama. Also, the plan is to paint the chandelier BEFORE installation.
I got the candles from GSW, who produce a variety of 3D printed sets that can take your diorama to the next level. Since the wheel has 10 "spokes", I decided to have the candles follow the arrangement of the spokes, but cut the number in half. I glued them with superglue.
I simulated the leaking wax using PVA glue
Once the PVA glue dried, that was it.
