UMS Agram @ Malifaux turnier mit 50SS in Wien
Part of the crew of UMS "Agram" decided to spend the weekend of January 13.-15. in a capital of one of our former states. Nope, not that one. Vienna.
The whole weekend was a positive experience. Unfortunately because of my college obligations I was forced to travel alone by a later bus. The ride lasted about 5 hours and the snow luckily didn't slow me down. The guys greeted me at the station and took me to the appartment we rented. It was ok and near the tournament venue. The store, called Siren Games, is much better supplied than our own Carta Magica and there are several rooms with gaming tables in the basement. One presentation table is located above in the store itself and is immediately visible from the entrance.
GORAN: We arrived on Firday and the appartmenta nad the store were located in a nice part of the city that is well connected to the centre of the city. The appartment and the store were less than 200 meters away (so good job, Miran, at scouting :) ) Considering I didn't partake in the tournament, I had a proper looksee at what's on offer in the store and I can say the store is excellent and the crew of Zagreb's Carta Magica can learn a lot from their Austrian counterparts.
MIRAN: The start, registrations, that is, of the tournament started at 11AM which suited everyone from our crew as we kinda celebrated the night before so we had a chance to get our sleep and breakfast in peace. The gaming area in the store (basement) is excellent, nicely decorated with gaming and movie designs, there was enough space between the tables and ample light. Most importantly the room was airy enough so there was no smells of formerly spilt blood, sweat and tears as can happen sometimes in some gaming areas ;)
The games were intriguing, opponents nice and organisers approachable. In the end I ranked as I expected.
KUKI: The tournament was excellent, people I played against were nice, hospitable and friendly. I never had any problems with any of the rules nor were there any rules disagreements during gaming. The only (small) objection is the number of terrain fielded on the tables. But I guess it's because I'm used to a higher standard we have here in UMS Agram. Rest of the tournaments gets a big thumbs up from me!
After the tournament we didn't end up with the locals for some beer, as is usual in Zagreb. It's not usual in Wien, I guess. But I figure we managed quite decently alone :) In the end, Miran won the tournament.
MIRAN: The tables were ok, combination of self made and premade/prepainted terrain. For a tournament, quite enough, even though, by our standards a bit less of them per table. The games lasted longer (2 hours) than we played in Agram so the tempo of gaming was much more relaxed, and more "work" could be done. Gaining Grounds 2017 (in addition to prolonging the games) shook the gameplay as well. With all the new schemes and strategies, the games were interesting and intense until the very end. You really needed to think which schemes to take through.
The final standings (thanks to guys from Siren Games for supplying us with these):
Player TP/Diff/VP
Miran 9/7/25
Josip 9/4/13
Tris 6/12/21
Marko 6/6/21

Michael W. 3/0/20
Tomislav 3/-3/10
Ana 3/-5/14
Melanie 3/-9/12

In the end, we'd really like to thank the organisers for running such a fun tournament. We'll be back!
