Astronaut on the Beach – Part 1
After wandering for a long time and thinking about what to do with the astronaut, a story simply came to me one morning.
Namely, the astronaut is a small, 1 cm high miniature within the Massive Voodoo challenge.
The figure as such is very simple, but opens up so many possibilities with ambience.
My final idea is that the whole scene mixes the reality and imagination of a boy standing on the beach with his shovel and bucket and built sand towers and his balloon he dropped from his hand and waves to him imagining he is an Astronaut on another planet and looking at the earth. He is wearing an astronaut suit in his pajamas, which is another small element that reveals that it is an imagination, and his vision can be seen in the reflection of the visor.
On this project I wanted to test a very pronounced light source that affects the scene, a freehand and a slice for the water effect i.e. some kind of shallow beach.
So I started by sticking a lot of sand with a slight slope where the sea will come.
I mixed PVA glue and sand and applied at first until I got the basic shape, and later with diluted PVA and oyster a little finer radio slope.
After that, I looked for a composition and sketched where all of the elements should be.
The tower was made of greenstuff and later coated with PVA and pitch in a couple of hands.
I made the bucket out of a brush storage tube, glued it to a thin plastic wrap and sanded it. For the bucket handle I used a thin hobby wire which I also used for the balloon rope.
At this stage of assembling the biggest question mark for me was how to make a balloon. After a bit of brainstorming, I decided to charge a ball of styrofoam, also from a hobby shop, to the middle of different thicknesses of hobby wire.
Wanting to get rid of the visible pattern of styrofoam, which would surely remain visible even after applying the paint, so glued the ball on the wire, I dipped it in a rubber band and let it dry. This gave me a smooth surface of the balloon without a pattern and more favorable for applying paint.
The lower part of the balloon where the rope is tied is made of greenstuff.
I painted the balloon and the Atronaut separately from the base.
More about the painting process and freehand in the next article in this series.
