Black Templars Sword Brother – part 4
In this series of articles, I will explain my approach to painting a Black Templar Sword Brother from the old metal box, in the meantime, while the paint on the larger surfaces was drying, I painted the rest of the details on the miniature.
The chains and claw blades were first painted using Heavy Metal by Scale 75, and then shaded by Soft Body Black from Secret Weapon Miniatures, and lastly highlighted with Speed Metal by Scale 75.
The bronze cross and the cross hanging in front of the toga, the skulls on the right claw and the backpack, and the belt buckle were all painted in a basecoat of Viking Gold by Scale 75, shaded using Flesh Wash by Secret Weapon Miniatures, and lastly highlighter by Dwarf Gold by Scale 75.
The eye lenses on the miniature’s helmet were painted with a basecoat of Deep Red by Scale 75, then I highlighted a gradually smaller surface with Blood Red, Aldebaran Red, and finished of with a dot of White from Scale 75, which was applied to the front of the lens.
The leather details were painted using Brown Leather from Scale 75 (the belt and pistol holster), which were then washed using Red Black by Secret Wepon Miniatures. I then highlighted with Red Leather using a glaze consistency, and the Orange Leather also in glaze consistency, although this shade was only used on the most prominent parts (such as the bumps on the outer surface of the holster).
The painting of the Maltese Cross on the chest of the toga was done using the Black Oilbrusher from Ammo, and Enamel Odourless Thinner, also by Ammo, the goal here is to draw very thin and very consistent lines, although I wouldn’t recommend such a detailed and error-prone step to the impatient.
I then did a further highlight on the cape, for this I used pure Mojave White in a glaze consistency, which is a very dilute and transparent paint, which is applied gradually to a smaller surface, and which gives a very good imitation of illumination on a surface, and very smooth color transitions.
I then went to deepen the contrast between the red and darker red on the inside of the cape, I did this by using a glaze of Aldebaran Red from Scale 75, and I used gradual brush strokes to create the illusion of illumination on the prominent parts of the cape. I also made an effort by using midtones from Deep Red by Scale 75 to Aldebaran Red, to create a transition of shadow to light.
