Exhibitions we visited in January
During January, our members visited three exhibitions in museums and galleries in Zagreb. Two exhibitions were in the Ethnographic Museum, while the third was in the Forum Gallery.
The first exhibition was a Christmas fairy tale at the Ethnographic Museum by Jasmina Kosanović. There we were greeted by white fairies that symbolize snowflakes and winter, little robinas that represent the warmth of home in the winter night and a forest covered with snow behind whose pine branches frozen animals peek out…
The second exhibition was also held at the Ethnographic Museum entitled IgračKe - Childhood Forever, which was conceived as a journey through the history of toys and games from the holdings of the Ethnographic Museum, created in Croatia and by Croatian authors from the late 19th century to the present. In addition to interactive content and oversized children's toys from Marija Bistrica, visitors can enjoy many favorite cartoons such as Professor Balthazar and Little Flying Bears, produced by Zagreb Film, which is also a partner of the project.
On January 31, we attended the opening of the exhibition Winton Afrić - Here be Dragons in the Forum Gallery, Teslina 16 realized in collaboration with the University of Algebra.
Winton Afrić was born in 1980. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, and received his doctorate in information sciences from the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Zagreb. He is currently working at the University of Algebra. He has participated in a number of scientific congresses, signed numerous articles and is the co-author of two books in the field of informatics, theory and sociology of computer games. This exhibition shows his figures of dragons and various other mythological creatures, created in 3D.
The head of the Forum Gallery, Feđa Gavrilović, pointed out the specificity of this work: “Winton Afrić is an exceptional master in the field of 3D sculpture, and this exhibition of his works shows the wonderful collaboration of the epochs. Here, with the help of new technology, ancient beings from the traditions and legends of cultures around the world, beings like dragons and griffins, have been revived.
What all people have in common is the structure of the brain, which, regardless of physical distances, different living conditions and local customs, often creates similar stories, heroes, antagonists and plots. We remember them to this day thanks to fantastic picture books, books and movies, various creative visualizations of these legends. All of these stories live as codes in our brains with different variations - in the memories of individuals or the memories of cultures. Winton Afrić translated these codes into computer ones.
Some will say that today's rationalist civilization killed all the dragons from ancient times, when they appeared to our ancestors as presumed causes of various phenomena or as symbols of fear of the unknown. But insiders know that dragons are immortal. We came to these computer possibilities of their presentation by overcoming all these fears, with the gradual progress of society, civilization and technology. We have come to today’s world (with all its positive and negative aspects) because we have confronted all the monsters of our imagination and tamed them.
Who, then, can claim that there is no fantasy in this technologically determined modernity? ”
The exhibition can be visited until 5.2.2022.
Eye details on large dragons. Irises are 3D sculptures that are then painted and then immersed in a spherical mold in a transparent resin to get a real eye effect.
