Diorama USSR 1986 – part 4
In this series of articles, I will write about making a USSR diorama in 1986. I will show how I made the "terrain" and the model myself, how I painted them and what effects I used. In addition, vegetation and resin will be discussed.
In this article I will describe the painting of a concrete statue. As you know, the statue is made of styrofoam and then coated with a layer of diluted plaster for texture. I decided to paint it with acrylic paints that I will dilute almost to the consistency of a wash. I started first with lighter, neutral gray shades.
Somehow everything was too monotonous for me, so I decided to go for light darker shades of dark blue. Using the same method, diluted paint, I applied layers of darker shades of blue-gray combination this time.
Brightening followed. I carefully chose the angle from which it will be brighter to get a little more on the dynamism of the statue itself.
When the acrylic dried, I decided to add a weathering effect to the oils. With a black, dark green and olive green oilbrusher I applied from below and with a brush dipped in thinner stretched upwards as the moisture rises.
Then I used a white oilbrusher to apply dots on the upper surfaces and strokes downwards for additional light and shadow dynamics.
This completed the creation of the diorama base, so I framed it.
