Framed diorama – part 3 – Historical vignette
During the weekend, May 20-21, 2023, we held a new diorama-making weekend workshop called Vignette in a frame. Over the course of two days, the participants created a stage display of the haustor/entrance according to their own choice from about 10 offered designs, some historical and some fantasy / SF themes. The subject of the workshop was the creation of a diorama with elements of stone, wood, metal, concrete/plaster. In a frame with internal dimensions of 10 x 15 cm, they placed a representation of the entrance to a building. In the next few articles, we will show the steps in creating three designs (historical, sci-fi and fantasy themed).
The third article in the series is devoted to a historical topic. In it, we will process the construction of a Spanish/Mexican house with a facade from the 18th-19th century. Given that it is all stone/plaster, we cannot make a "mould" of wooden elements (beams, as in the hobbit hole). For the purposes of this diorama, we first need to create stone curbs for the windows and doors. We will also cast the curbs from gypsum, and for them we have made molds from balsa/slats glued to plastic foil - to give the mold elasticity for easier removal of the casting.
Once we've removed the castings from the mold (and destroyed it in the process), it's time to cut the castings to the desired lengths. We did that with a model chicken.
We formed a shape inside the "tub". Then we carefully glued the plaster casts to each other with superglue. In doing so, we made sure that they did not stick to the bottom of the "tub".
This extra effort about not sticking to the bottom of the tub was necessary because we wanted to insert metal bars into the edges of the window. For this, drilling was necessary, which would not have been possible if everything had been glued in the "tub". We made the grates from large paper clips (size 6) and placed everything and this time glued it inside the "tub".
We were finally able to pour plaster for the walls.
We textured the floor. First, we laid the tiles at the entrance/door, and the rest we sprinkled sand in different granulations on the smeared PVA glue.
Next came the making of the door. We made them from 1.5 mm thick balsa.
We inserted the finished vignette into the frame!
