Stegadon Conversion – part 4
In this article, we continue with the painting of Mazdamundi models. Following on from the previous article, today I'm talking about painting the Stegadon itself.
I had an idea for a specific color palette for Zlaaq (the name in the lore), but during the process I changed my mind about the execution. I think the result turned out better overall, so I'm not complaining too much.
Stegadon itself was first applied with an airbrush, borrowed from a friend for the purpose of testing base colors on a large model. I think this is the ideal type of model to use airbrush for most of the parts, I don't own one so I decided to just accommodate a bit :)
After priming it, I tried to emphasize the armored part of the skin with light gray using the drybrush method. When I tested the rest of the model, I didn't like the color composition. It seemed to me that the stegadon as the largest model lacked colors and I decided to bring it closer to the color palette that is on the GW site, i.e. make it redder (but not too much).
I decided to use a diluted red contrast color over most of the models. With this, I got a tone that is not too strong, and still kept the good sides of the contrast that is already on the airbrushed model. After that, I drybrushed the highlighted parts of the model with a light-cream color - knees, stomach, etc. I left the lower part of the legs redder, I liked how it looks like it is gradually losing color, as if the skin is changing with age.
The shell received a couple of washes of nuln oil, with a repeated drybrush of light gray. I wasn't thrilled with the transition of those two parts of the model, so I added freckles in most of the contact areas.
The horns are painted by drawing a combination of gray-brown color and then ivory over that from half of the horn approx. The rope is an ivory color with a wash of a combination of agrax eartshade and seraphim sepia. After that, a slight ivory highlight again. The skulls are dark brown with an ivory white drybrush.
The base was already contrasted with zenithal prime, I decided to only shade it with contrasts and shades - more tones and colors in various places to make it look uneven. The stone parts of the ruins are layers of gray to lighter in 3 layers. From the dark gray I added more and more ivory white. At the end, I also covered the ruins with a bit of cathonian camoshade, to make everything dirty.
