The Bust Saga (part 3)
If you are a bit older and from Zagreb, you probably remember Saga o Pičekima? If not, the joke will elude you. Well, hopefully beside the Croatian pun, you will like the rest of this saga. Goran and Marko will take you on a miniature painting journey while they build and paint one and the same bust for their Admin Challenge. Why call it a saga? Because everyone who knows them knows this will take a while to finish.... They chose a bust by Crecy Models that comes in two options – as King Ladislav Jagellone and as Grand Master of Teutonic Order Ulrich von Jungingen. Goran and Marko will do different versions...
MARKO: I continued putting on the basecolor I started last week. First I painted the cloak blue, and then the two shields yellow or gray - as the first step to get white.
Then I decided to put one layer of wash on the cloak to get the first outline of the shadows. Since the cloak has the largest grooves - I decided on a rather dark shade. After drying I ended up with weird white stains. I’m not quite sure what they were, but I coated them with another layer of wash. I hope it looks better next week: D
GORAN: This time I decided to focus entirely on the cloak of the bust.Since I started to achieve a result that is as similar as possible to the official one from the manufacturer's site, I started with the layering / glazing technique to achieve gradual transitions between shady and lighter parts of the fabric. I first went with Rainy Gray paint by Scale75 to fill the coverage of the entire mantle. Then I set off with a mix of Nacar and Rainy Gray by Scale75 to do the first lighter layers.
What is important to emphasize here is that this technique requires VERY diluted paint and very good brush control, which I have not fully mastered, but with practice to perfection. Then I set off with a clean Nacar to further illuminate, and then returned to Rainy Gray to fix the transitions and shadows. I finished with pure Birch paint by Scale75, which I put wider on the lighter parts, starting to slowly achieve the final tones of the mantle.
MARKO: For the end, and I wanted to deal with that this week, I decided to deal with the insignia freehand. During the week I found the coat of arms of Ladislav Jagellone on the net, which consists of four separate coats of arms. The Polish one that I plan to put on the chest (white eagle on the red field), the coat of arms of Jagelović that will go on the cloak (yellow stylized cross on the blue field), and the stylized Croatian and Bohemian coats of arms that will go on the shields. Unfortunately, I forgot the pencil with which I would sketch the coats of arms so I contented myself with an exercise on paper. In any case, before drawing live on your miniature, I would recommend this method to "get into your hand".
